Harvard

I've been nothing but busy lately as a transition at Seafarer's Friend and an unusual amount of Boston bound ship traffic has me putting in long, long days on the waterfront. It's a good thing, however, that I love my job. Here I am about to hop in the van with this seafarer and a few others from his ship, the Reykjafoss. They wanted to see Harvard and MIT, so I dropped them off at Harvard Square. I talked to them later and they said it was so relaxing to be off the ship, and that this was the best shore leave they'd had in a long time.

Alaskan Chaplains

This is my friend from the bulk carrier Maritime Queen. He's from a country that is, so I've heard, not receptive to Christians. He told me today that before he met the Christian port chaplains in Anchorage, Alaska, he did not trust Christians at all. After one day with the chaplains in Anchorage, he changed his mind, and he told me very proudly, "They are the ones I trust most!"

It was heart warming, to say the least. I was so proud of my fellow chaplains, and honored that he would share that kind of thing with me. I can only hope that some seafarer is in some other port telling someone there about the port chaplains in Boston!

Steadier Footing

For the last two days, the most stable place in my life has been aboard the ships I visit. It's ironic, since the ships and their crew are an extremely fluid and transient bunch...crew coming and going every week, traveling all over the globe, busy all the time. Nonetheless, the place where my footing has been the steadiest is aboard ship.

These guys haven't been ashore for more than twelve hours or so in the last month. Tonight they sail for India, about a month's voyage from Boston. They'll pass Somalia en route.

Cabot's

100% of comments on the previous post were uncertain of what the subject is in the picture...well I'll tell you what it is. Assuming Heaven is real, and assuming that God does whatever he wills, I can only conclude that somewhere in his perfect will he saw fit to turn Heaven into a meal, and present it to me on a plate.

Open-face roast beef sandwich with mashed redskins and gravy, served piping hot at Cabot's Diner in Newton, MA.

Go there, get this meal, and then get a dish of pistachio ice cream for dessert.

Hey Look Pictures Too!

Yeah...this is sweet.

Can I really post via email from my Palm Centro? If you're reading this, the answer is yes!

EMS Episode 1

The following is an actual event that occurred at an actual Eastern Mountain Sports store where I actually witnessed this actually take place.

EMS Customer: "Excuse me, why are these gloves different prices?"
(The customer hands the employee two pairs of gloves, same model, different colors, different price.)
EMS Employee: "Well, sometimes a color gets phased out, or it doesn't sell as well, so we mark it down."
EMS Customer: "So this green pair is nine-ninety eight, and this red pair is only 30% off?"
EMS Employee: "Yes, ma'am."
EMS Customer: "Well WHY?
EMS Employee: "Um..."
EMS Customer: "I'll tell you why, it's discrimintation! That's why. I'm serious, this is discrimination!"
EMS Employee: "Um..."
(The customer turns and walks away, putting the gloves back in their place, and continues to shop.)

So, there you have it, Eastern Mountain Sports has been found out. Our perfect plan has been ruined by this customer. We'll have to think of some other way to discriminate against people who like red fleece gloves instead of green fleece gloves.

The End Times

I just finished my last paper for my first semester of seminary. Let me just say that I am pumped and relieved. Wow.

God is good.
